Screen Printer

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under supervision of the Production Manager, reviews the daily and extended schedule establishing order priorities and screen needs; sets up runs and tears down manual and automatic presses; maintains cleanliness of work station and condition of equipment; substitutes as a press assistant when printing skills are not needed; maintains the flexibility to perform related work as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains a minimum eight hour day, five day week working overtime as agreed upon by the Production Manager.  Stays in work area so as to be available in assisting customers and team members.
  2. Discusses the daily and extended schedule with the Production Manager, reviewing it for priorities, press and screen needs; identifies jobs that require special set up, handling or due times.
  3. Supervises the work duties for the Press Assistant on the automatic and manual presses, advising and delegating responsibility in the set up, run and tear down of jobs; inspects quality and quantity of work performed.
  4. Thoroughly reads the sales order form, production form and art reference provided such as pelon or color comp of each order; checks first with the Production Manager, secondly the Sales Representative on all questionable information such as spellings, color or design selection, location, etc. 
  5. Sets up presses by obtaining the necessary screens, substrate, ink and related supplies needed to process orders; places the appropriate screens in the press clamps; tapes off the uncoated and non-printing areas of the screens; mixes the ink to specification putting it into the screen well with a squeegee of proper hardness and edge for the print; with the aid of pin registration, aligns the screens to the proper registration; establishes the proper placement of the substrate on the pallet; sets up the flash unit when printing multiple colors on darks or help maintain print quality; checks for and repairs print flaws and pinholes; pulls several make-ready proof prints to review registration, color and quality; compares the proof prints with the previous pelon or obtains approval from the Production Manager or Sales Representative; selects a pelon for the order form and marks it with the date, sequence of color lay down, mesh and ink, if there were any problems with the print process and your name; confirms the accuracy of the goods count with the Press Assistant before beginning the press run.
  6. Runs the order maintaining the print quality; applies and reapplies spray adhesive to the pallets; places the substrate onto the pallet or checks the placement of the substrate done by the Press Assistant; checks the ink being deposited on the substrate, periodically wiping the screens to reduce fuzziness; removes the substrate from pallet placing it with the print side up onto the dryer belt or drying rack; continually examines or instructs the Press Assistant to examine the completed substrate for quality, cured ink, damage and scorching; checks with the Press Assistant that the final count is correct before tearing down the press.
  7. Completes cap and garment orders by applying transfers, film letters, patches, etc., or spot curing with the flat or cap heat presses; maintains the inventory of film letters, numbers and paper stencils, ordering through the Production Manager as needed.
  8. Tears down the press by returning excess ink to the ink bucket; removes the tape from the screen; unclamps and removes the screens from press; replaces pallet protect on the pallets and cleans squeegees and ink knives.
  9. Trains the Press Assistant in the set up, run and tear down of the automatic and manual presses,; collaborates with the Production Manager in the evaluation and dismissal of Press Assistants.
  10. Performs regular maintenance on the manual and automatic presses according to the service manuals as well as periodically wiping them clean of ink and spray adhesive; assists in the upkeep of the dryers and flash units changing fuses, cleaning filters and wiping them free of ink and spray adhesive; keeps ink buckets in their allotted locations and the mixing tables clean; orders supplies through the Production Manager.
  11. Acts as a press assistant when printing skills are not needed.  See press assistant job description for these responsibilities.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience:  Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.  Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  1. Possession of a high school degree.

  2. Three years of work experience (at least one in printing).

Knowledge of:  Printing process and basic art; fundamental math.

Skilled at:  Reading, deciphering information, operating printing presses, flash units and dryers; matching colors; registering screens; maintaining quality prints; organizing tasks; problem solving; working as part of a team.

Desirable qualifications:  Dependable and Self-motivated
